Mom Cole's Christmas Cookies

Cookies:

1 1/3 C. Sugar

3/4 C Crisco

2 Eggs

1/12 tsp. Baking Powder

11/4 tsp. baking soda

1/3 c buttermilk

4 shakes nutmeg

Icing:

1 c powdered sugar

2 tsp. milk

2 tsp. light Karo syrup

1/4 tsp. vanilla

food coloring (opt)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix the sugar and Crisco with a wooden spoon until well blended. Add eggs, baking powder and baking soda and mix until well blended. Add the buttermilk and nutmeg and mix until well blended. Add the flour and mix until well blended. On a floured surface, roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to shape cookies. Spray cookie sheets with non-stick spray. Place cookies on sheets and bake for 9-10 minutes. Do not allow to brown on top. For icing: mix all ingredients together in a mixing bowl. After cookies have cooled, either pipe or drizzle the icing over the cookies.
